Summary

Paras Kaul is a brainwave artist who composes brainwave music and animation. She received an MFA degree in digital animation and video from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with undergraduate studies in English, art, and photography at California State University, Sacramento and James Madison University.

After completing her education, Paras held computer animation internships at Omnibus located at Paramount Studios in Hollywood and at Real Time Design in Chicago. As a production assistant at Digital Effects, Inc. in NY, she handled post production operations for digital animation.

About

While living in Hollywood, Paras was active in LA SIGGRAPH. In Mississippi, as an assistant professor in a Graduate Program for Electronic Visualization, she taught brainwave controlled animation and gaming and founded OKSIGGRAPH for Oktibbeha County, MS. After moving to Northern Virginia, she became the Director of Web Communications at George Mason University and co-chaired DCSIGGRAPH with Mary Higgins.

Paras has published peer-reviewed articles on brainwave learning and gaming and has been an invited speaker to France, Australia, and the UK—where she presented a brainwave interactive gaming prototype at the Dana Centre Museum of Science in London. In the US, Paras has demonstrated brainwave technology at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Torpedo Factory Art Center, the American Film Institute, Walker Art Museum (Minneapolis), National Qigong Association (PA), and at universities and convention centers in Los Angeles, Boston, Florida, Michigan, Washington State, Hawaii, and Virginia.

Paras Kaul  explores applications that utilize brainwave technology for interactive gaming. Using brainwave analysis, multimedia, and biofeedback, she produces  exciting and fun prototypes of brainwave games. She posits that morphing brainwaves to lower frequency, coherent brainwave states stimulates wellness in the mind and body.

Paras has held professional internships at Paramount Studios in Hollywood and Real Time Design in Chicago. As a production assistant at Digital Effects, Inc. in NY, she handled post production operations for computer animation. In Mississippi, as an assistant professor in a Graduate Program for Electronic Visualization, she founded a professional chapter of the Special Interest Group for Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques. She has been interviewed for Studio 360With Good Reason Radio, GMU-TV and Mason’s English Matters. Paras also has 10 years of web communications, project management, supervisory and online marketing experience in University Relations at George Mason University where she was a director and member of the Senior Management Team. At Mason, she also held positions in policy-making and strategic planning committees for the Information Technology Unit. She has authored website content and designed and produced websites since 1994. Additionally, Paras has published peer-reviewed articles on brainwave learning and gaming and has been an invited speaker to France, Australia, and the UK. She was the recipient of an Outstanding Achievement Award at Mason in 2005.

Research

Paras explores the use of brain wave applications and demonstrates brain wave morphing, a technique she coined that combines multimedia and brain wave interactive technology for learning and rehabilitation.  Brain wave morphing utilizes a brainwave interface system with electroencephalograph (EEG) software to analyze neural signaling in the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Neural signaling from the brain inputs to the computer for data collection using the system’s software. EEG analysis delineates the signals into frequency, amplitude, and coherence values. These values are assigned to software switches programmed to start and stop the movement of multimedia objects in a virtual environment.

Changes in  multimedia occur relative to changes in brain wave frequencies via biofeedback from the brain. Understanding the morphing process provides information about mental states associated with brain wave activity. The process provides a fun and exciting new learning experience.  The excitement comes from seeing and hearing how the brain is functioning, which gives an indication of the condition of the brain.  The mind has the ability to influence and manipulate the brain to emit high or low frequency neural signals.

The process of brain wave morphing refers to the ability to focus the mind to influence low frequency, coherent neural signaling, which affects the body’s wellness, as evidenced by the control of multimedia via biofeedback from the brain. Tuning the mind for the brain to emit low frequencies with  coherence between the right and left hemispheres of the brain stimulates wellness in the physical body. Brain wave morphing stimulates neural plasticity and increases focused attention, which potentially accelerates learning and rehabilitative processes.
